Sir Richard & Lady Burton's Stone Tent
September 21st 2008 21:55
Victorian explorer Sir Richard Burton (the role model for Lawrence of Arabia) and his widow are buried in a mausoleum of their own. It's a stone tent, in the Mortlake churchyard, an easy walk from the British Rail station at Mortlake.
Through a window, visitors can see inside.
I'm hoping to get photos but in the meantime, imagine a Bedouin tent in an English country churchyard and you have to ask... Why?
Lady Burton wanted her husband to be buried with many honours in Westminster Abbey. Her request was declined. Mortlake it was.
