London - it's all about the details. This is one city where it pays to take a close second look. Welcome to London on Skiponover.com, by Jill Browne.

Getting Around London on The Tube - London Underground

March 12th 2008 01:40
London's "tube" is the lifeline of commuters, tourists, and residents going about their daily business.

About the Tube

The Tube is an underground railway system with multiple lines - including some "overground", especially on the newer bits. The lines link to each other at selected stations. The tube stations are sometimes combined with or adjacent to train stations and the train lines (British Rail and the like). Buses serve the tube stations.

All of London's popular tourist sights are reachable by Tube. For less popular places, a bus ride or a walk might be part of the journey. Choose the Tube for a quick, direct journey. Choose the bus for seeing London en route to wherever you're going.

Ask at your hotel about the nearest Tube stations, and also about any special information - line or station closures, and peak times on the lines you'll be using.

At rush hour, the Tube in central London can be horribly packed with people, but this is not the case on every line all the time. Ask around for the best advice, and read up on London Transport's website too.

The Tube Map

The Tube Map is a wonderful diagram showing the lines in relation to each other. It is not to scale! Use it for riding the Tube, not for walking around.

Tube Maps are available wherever you buy London Transport tickets - most news agents, all stations, assorted other places. There is a copy on the back cover of the London A-Z, and many tourist guide books include one somewhere.

I loved the "Mind the Gap" announcement when the trains pulled up.

That was years ago. All very exciting for a Tassie person (we only have buses here).
